Living in Maize

Maize, located just northwest of Wichita, was established in 1886 by the Maize Town Company as the first stop outside Wichita on the Wichita and Colorado Railway. In the same year, they opened their first church and post office. The town experienced rapid growth starting in 1950, doubling in size by 1956 and continuing to grow quickly in recent years. Maize is known for valuing its community, highlighted by their motto, "Where Community Counts," and celebrates various events like an Arbor Day Celebration, City Wide Garage Sale, and Fall Festival.

Maize has an interesting past. In 1895, the town was laid out with two main 80-foot-wide avenues, Albert Avenue and Park Avenue. By then, Maize even had its newspaper, The Weekly Maize Critic, published on Fridays. The town faced challenges like a grasshopper invasion in 1936 and was part of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. In 1944, a flood hit the town, and during World War II, German prisoners of war helped clean up after the Woodard Elevator fire. They were fed three times a day at the Maize Cafe. In 1964, an Air Force F-105 fighter crashed nearby, but the pilot was safe. Unfortunately, this event led to the heart attack and death of Dennis Jones, the operator of Maize Mills.
